The Sloan's Lake neighborhood boundaries run north and south from Federal to Sheridan Boulevard and east and west from 17th to 29th Avenue, with the exception of a small pocket on the southeast end, from Meade Street to Federal, where 19th Avenue is the boundary line. Sloan's Lake Park is Denver’s second largest park and the lake is the city’s largest body of water.

On the west side of the lake, at 16th and Raleigh Street is the old Saint Anthony's Hospital, which was founded by the Sisters of St. Francis in the late 1880s. In 2013, the hospital moved to a new location in Lakewood and the building was abandoned. On the east end of the lake stands Lake Middle School, which was built in 1926. The school has unique architecture, with Moorish, medieval and English elements, in some ways resembling a castle.

The lake was created when in 1861, farmer Thomas Sloan was digging a well to irrigate his land. He tapped into a water aquifer which, overnight, spread 200 acres, forming a new body of water. Thomas Sloan sold the farm in 1872.
