One of the things I love about the Sloan’s Lake neighborhood is the mix of architectural styles you can find. While there are certainly blocks and sections of the neighborhood that tend to have similar styles of homes, the overall mix is quite varied. For example, the Witter-Cofield neighborhood has a large concentration of Queen Anne Victorians, and in the southeast pocket of the neighborhood, between Federal and Lowell and from 17th to 23rd, there are many new, modern multifamily developments. There’s also Tudors, Mediterranean Revivals, Mid-Century ranches, bungalows, and even a few Denver Squares. I love this article by 5280 Home that outlines the pros and cons of these architecture styles, as well as where to find them in Denver.

Victorian

Victorian

The high style Queen Anne Victorian above is the Frederic Neef House, an individual Denver Landmark. In the Witter-Cofield historic district, it features a complex roof shape and ornamentation, elaborate window decoration and an arched porch opening. The house has a low masonry retaining wall. It’s always a pleasure to walk by this masterpiece!

Denver Square

Denver Square

The term “Denver Square” comes with lots of debate and from architecture buffs. The term comes from the square shape of these brick homes, and they are usually quite simple, with two or two and a half stories that have matching width and height. In other parts of the country, this style of home is called a “Foursquare”. Capitol Hill, City Park, Cheesman and Washington Park are filled with Denver Squares, but they aren’t quite as prevalent in Sloan’s Lake.

Condos

Condos

There aren’t a ton of condo buildings in the neighborhood, but most consist of 1 to 2 bedroom units. Lakehouse Condos, built in 2019, are the newest addition to the condo market for Sloan’s, although they are technically located within the West Colfax boundaries. Other smaller complexes are Park Plaza, 2501 Grove and Plaza del lago in Lakewood. A more comprehensive list can be found here.

Bungalow Style

Bungalow Style

The bungalow style is seen more heavily in West Highland, but there are a good number of them in the Sloan’s Lake neighborhood. Many feature craftsman trim and woodworking, as well as front porches and brick construction. On the interiors, many have a front room with a fireplace, a dining room and kitchen behind, and bedrooms on the other side of the house.

Mediterranean Revival

Mediterranean Revival

Mediterranean Revival styles of homes like this one, above, are concentrated heavily in the Sloan’s Lake neighborhood. Stucco, archways and red tile roofs are the giveaways here. This photo shows the architectural style used for a block of row homes.

Modern Architecture

Modern Architecture

Modern architecture can be seen in single family homes, townhomes, and other multi-family units in Sloan’s Lake. There is a heavy concentration of “slot homes” in the southeast section of the neighborhood. Slot Homes are a somewhat controversial building style that was used by developers and builders between 2010-2019 to fit several units on a lot by turning the entrance of the row homes to the side of the street, instead of facing the street as is traditional in row home architecture.
