I’ve been thinking a lot about all of the small businesses that make our Denver community so wonderful. Sure, Amazon boxes arrive at my doorstep more often than I care to admit, but this holiday season, I’ve made a concerted effort to shop small and support businesses in my neighborhood. If you follow me on Instagram, you’ll see that I often post about neighborhood shops and small businesses. I love curating client closing gifts from small businesses as well. In fact, that may be one of my favorite parts of my job!

This effort doesn’t stop with brick and mortar businesses and extends to many other small business services in Denver. One business that I’m excited to highlight here is a photography business, M Stevenson Photo, run by a friend and past client, Molly Stevenson (above). This year, Molly graciously accepted the job of booking photo shoots in front of the homes of many of my past clients. Because a client appreciation event wasn’t in the cards this year, I wanted to gift a lasting - and happy! - memory to my clients. Molly ran around town for several months, meeting with my clients and capturing beautiful moments of their lives with her camera. My clients were grateful for the gift and I was thrilled to support Molly. Win-win.

Do You Have Any Childhood Memories Related to Photography?

As a kid, I was always dressing up with my friends and my dad would take our photo on the front porch. I loved getting the printed images back from the store and picking my favorites to put into a scrapbook. My first opportunity to take a photography class was in high school. My dad gave me his old 35mm camera from the 70's and I fell in love with photography and developing images in the darkroom.

When and How did You Start Your Own Business?

I started my business four years ago. My best friend helped me design my website and business cards to make it official. At first, I relied heavily on family and friends to let me take their photos, and then they spread the word. Ever since, I have had a wonderful list of referrals!

What is Your Favorite Subject to Photograph?

I love photographing people because it is a unique experience every time. No two people are alike. Everyone moves and thinks differently, so each photoshoot feels special. I especially enjoy portraiture and fashion photography.

Describe a Moment in Your Life That Brings You Joy.

One of my favorite times of the year is during the Holidays, when I get cards in the mail from families with the photos that I took. Of course, I remember the images, but there's nothing like seeing them printed and decorated with personality!
